The loss of all teeth, or a situation where most remaining teeth cannot be saved, can significantly impact daily life. Chewing difficulties are often accompanied by insecurity when speaking, the avoidance of certain foods, and discomfort caused by removable dentures.

Modern implantology offers a solution that enables the rehabilitation of an entire jaw using a few strategically placed implants, onto which a fixed prosthetic restoration is attached. One such approach is the All-on-X concept.

In this guide, we explain what "All-on-X" is, who it is intended for, what the treatment involves, and what you can expect throughout the entire process.

The "All-on-X" concept represents a modern approach to rehabilitating a completely edentulous or severely compromised jaw. Instead of placing an implant for every single tooth, a few implants are inserted to serve as supports for a fixed prosthetic restoration.

The letter "X" indicates that the number of implants is not predetermined for every patient. Depending on anatomy, bone quantity and quality, sinus position, and other clinical factors, a varying number of implants may be planned.

Therefore, the therapy is not determined only according to the name of the method, but according to the individual diagnosis and the plan that suits the specific patient.

All-on-X implants serve as supports for the entire fixed dental arch.

In conventional implant therapy, a single implant typically replaces a single lost tooth. With the All-on-X concept, several implants collectively support a larger prosthetic restoration that replaces an entire arch of teeth.

This enables the patient to receive:

An important advantage of this approach is that the available bone can be utilized in a way that provides stable support for the prosthetic restoration, even when significant bone loss has occurred.

However, whether All on X can be applied to a specific patient can only be determined after an examination and appropriate diagnostics.

All-on-X implants are most often considered for patients who are completely edentulous or have a large number of teeth with a poor prognosis.

Potential candidates are patients who:

However, the fact that a patient lacks a sufficient number of teeth does not in itself mean that All-on-X is automatically the best option.

It is necessary to assess the condition of the bones, gums, bite, general condition of the oral cavity and other factors that can affect the success of the therapy.

All-on-X therapy can be performed on one or both jaws.

The anatomical situation in the lower jaw often differs from that of the upper jaw, whereas in the upper jaw, the position of the sinuses and the quality of the available bone require additional attention.

For this reason, the number of implants and their positioning cannot be determined in advance solely based on the number of teeth the patient wishes to replace.

Individualized planning is the key to successful therapy.

One of the most important questions patients have is what the entire process looks like.

The first step is a detailed examination. If necessary, a CBCT scan—a 3D image of the jaw—is performed to assess bone quantity and quality and to analyze anatomical structures.

Based on the clinical examination and imaging, the position of the implant and the future prosthetic restoration is planned.

Digital technology enables more precise planning and better communication between the dentist, the implantologist, and the dental laboratory.

After an individual plan is made, the implants are placed in the previously planned positions.

In certain cases, it is possible to combine the extraction of remaining unsalvageable teeth and implant placement within the same treatment phase.

Depending on the stability of the implant and the individual plan, the patient can receive a temporary fixed prosthetic work.

This is one of the features that makes All-on-X therapy particularly attractive to patients who do not want to go without teeth for a long period.

Implants require time to establish a stable connection with the surrounding bone. This process is called osseointegration.

During that period, the patient attends check-ups according to the dentist's instructions.

After an appropriate healing period and assessment of implant stability, the definitive prosthetic restoration is fabricated.

The material for the final restoration depends on the treatment plan, functional needs, aesthetics, and the patient's budget.

One of the most common questions regarding All-on-X implants is whether the patient can receive fixed teeth immediately after implant placement.

In certain cases, it is possible to create a temporary fixed restoration very soon after the surgical phase. However, this is neither possible nor recommended for every patient.

The decision depends on several factors, including:

Therefore, the term "teeth in a day" should not be viewed as a universal rule. The most important thing is that the treatment is planned safely and on an individual basis.

All-on-X is not a substitute for every type of implant therapy. The choice depends on the number of missing teeth, the condition of the remaining teeth, and the anatomical situation.

For some patients, "All-on-X" may be the best choice, while for others, it is better to preserve existing teeth and replace only the missing ones.

The greatest advantage for the patient is the ability to receive fixed teeth that are not removed during daily life.

Other advantages may include:

Unlike a conventional complete denture, a fixed restoration is attached to implants.

Patients can feel more secure while chewing and speaking.

Modern prosthetic materials enable the creation of natural tooth shapes and colors.

For the rehabilitation of the entire jaw, it is not necessary to place an implant for every tooth.

The number and position of the implants are determined based on the patient's anatomy, rather than a universal scheme.

If you are searching for "All-on-X" in Banja Luka, it is important not to choose a dental clinic based solely on price.

Complex implant rehabilitation requires collaboration across multiple fields of dentistry. Beyond the surgical placement of the implants themselves, it is necessary to properly plan the bite, aesthetics, the shape of the future teeth, and the prosthetic work.

What is the All-on-X concept?
